Pissarro Sounds is a spatial sound compostion presented as a multi-part, real-time, extended-reality sound environment for four exhibition spaces, as part of the exhibition Camille Pissarro. The Studio of Modernism at the Kunstmuseum Basel in 2021.
This sonic artwork is based on the sound of the contemporary environment and was composed from on newly created recordings made during a trip to France, at places such as Éragny-sur-Epte, Le Havre and Paris. It was presented on a specialized binaural headphone system that could track the positions of individual visitors in the exhibition spaces with centimeter precision. These positions were transferred in real time to a 3D model of the exhibition rooms, in which the sound composition had previously been spatialized. This enabled visitors to experience the work as a virtual, three-dimensional sound experience in relation to their individual position, with the visitors themselves controlling the perspective and focus on the compositon as they moved through the different exhibition spaces.
Passages from letters written by Camille Pissarro and his contemporaries, read by actors Hanns Zischler and Marie Grützke, accompanied the composition.
The sound work Pissarro Sounds by Moritz Fehr was created in collaboration with the Kunstmuseum Basel, iart AG, the University of Music FHNW and idee & Klang Audio Design. It was the first public application of the Immersive Audio Guiding System (IAGS) and was supported by Innosuisse.
