THE EFFULGENCE OF THE NORTH (2007-2017)
Site-specific spatial sound installation for a panoramic paiting at the Velaslavasay Panorama
The Effulgence of the North is a 360-degree panoramic painting that was on view at the Velaslavasay Panorama Los Angeles between 2007-2017. In collaboration with painter Sara Velas and her team, Moritz Fehr composed spatial sound that was permanently integrated with the painting.
"The Velaslavasay Panorama presents to the public Effulgence of the North - a panoramic exploration of the limitless horizon which lies beyond the frigid terrain illuminated by the ethereal Aurora Borealis. An ongoing 35-minute cycle of subtly shifting light and sound enhances the immersive experience. Complimented by an exquisitely-wrought faux terrain, subtle changing light elements and an otherworldly soundscape, this unique and all-enveloping experience becomes a sublime illusory excursion to the reaches of the mystical Frozen North. Drawing on the illustrious history of the great panorama paintings of the 18th and 19th centuries, The Velaslavasay Panorama is an exhibition hall, theatre and garden dedicated to the production and presentation of unusual visual experiences, including those of the 360- degree variety. The Velaslavasay Panorama panoramic exhibition encircles the spectator with a fully enveloping atmosphere; the vast painting, of a continuous surrounding landscape, accompanied by soundscape composition and a three-dimensional element, will afford the viewer an opportunity to experience a complete sensory phenomenon."
